Ok, we use an affiliate version of GoDaddy hosting. For a while now, it has seemed that our hosting was slow for WordPress. After reading on a completely unrelated topic, I think I found the answer.

I was reading an article by ShoeMoney. In it he talked about Kontera. Kontera will add those hyperlinks to your pages based on keywords. Specifically, it will underline the words, you scroll over the word and an ad will appear. He spoke of how this slows your site. And because not a lot of money was made on Kontera, I figured I’d remove it from the site.

Well, once I removed Kontera from the site, this site sped up considerably. So, hope this helps!

Free website hosting companies.

Yes, you can host your website for free. And, it doesn’t have to be a plain old site. You can host your website for free even if you use tools such as WordPress. But, as with all free things, there is usually some cost involved, granted, it may not be an out of pocket expense.

The initial question is “How come I get it for free?” After all, nothing in business is free. Well, hosting companies compensate for this initial loss in a couple ways as follows:

ALWAYS: No matter what, the hosting company will post ads to your website. This way, they recieve money from new customers, pay-per-click campaigns, or affiliate marketing programs. It’s pretty smart actually. Consider this, all of the people you attract to your website are potential customers.

They may ask you to purchase something such as a domain name. This way, they did make some money.

The free hosting may be for a trial period. So, they’ll get money from you eventually.

If you install software, there may be some limitations. For example, there could be limited fuctionality that you won’t know about until you test out the site.

They hope that you’ll get frustrated with the ads and actually buy hosting.

If any of these things offend you, you may want to consider paying for hosting. Today, hosting is not that expensive, for example, you can host a site for less than $40 a year. But, if you are looking to test the waters, why not try it before you spend the money. After all, all of the hosting companies will allow you to switch over to an ad free site easily.

We’ve taken some time to track down several hosting companies that will offer free hosting with your domain. Granted, the hosting may be a do it yourself website. NOTE: In most, if not all, cases, the free hosting is a do it yourself website package, or they allow you to install packages such as Wordpress for free. Don’t expect that you will be able to register or transfer your domain name, then upload your entire site via ftp.

List of Free Website Hosting Companies (with domain name purchase):

GoDaddy

1 AND 1
With each 1and1 domain, you get free private domain registration, host unlimited 1&1 domans, 5 subdomains, 5 host external domains, DNS management, domain forwarding, URL masking, domain contact management, domain access with or without www, 1 email account, supported by IMAP & POP3, 2GB of mailbox space, 200 email aliases, email auto-responder, email forwarding, catch all email addresses, optional spam filter, 1&1 Starter website builder, 1&1 control panel, simple submissions for SEO, and phone support.

Aplus.net
With each domain, you get a starter page, email address, and 100 email forwarders.

What do we recommend? We recommend both GoDaddy and FastDomain.
Why? Both of these offer you the ability to set up a website now. So, if you’re just looking to get your name out and put up something quick these solutions are easy and quick. They also will allow you to upgrade when you’re ready.
If you happen to know of any more, please let us know. It took a while to track these guys down.

Google website hosting. Set up your site at Google for free.

Did you know that you could create a website and host it with Google? That’s right, we could have been hosting our website with Google.

What is Google website hosting?

If you have a Google account, you can set up your own site with Google. That’s right. You can even have your domain name point to the site.

So, what is it? Google provides a do it yourself system which allows you to create an unknown number of sites (I have 5 private sites). You can pick out some simple designs and templates, add logos, etc. One of the cooler things about it is that you can add Google Gadgets to it. So, you don’t have to program anything. Plus, there are hundreds of Google Gadgets to add to your site.

How do I create my Google website?

There are a couple of ways to get to it. If you’re starting out, just visit the link http://www.google.com/sites. Here, you can sign up to create your site. Once you’ve signed up, you can use iGoogle to get to it later. If you are already signed up with Google, go to your iGoogle page, http://www.igoogle.com. Look in the top navigation for the link called “Sites”. If you don’t see it immediately, click on the “More” drop-down to find the link “Sites”. If you still can’t find it, click on the “Even More” link to find it.

How do I point my domain name to my Google site?

First, log into iGoogle and browse to your site using the sites link in the top navigation.

Look in the top right hand side of your site for the More Actions button, click on it and choose “Manage site”

In the left hand menu, click on “Web Address”

Follow the instructions to add your website address, that’s it!

DoFollow versus NoFollow, how to get more comments on your site.

Well, I have to admit, I had no idea what the real meaning of dofollow and nofollow meant. So, with a little research, here’s what I found.

When you are coding, you add a link, simple right. Well, you can add a parameter to your link to state whether or not you want search engines to follow the link and crawl the page on the other end. In order to do so, you would add rel=nofollow. If this parameter is at the end of the link, then the search engine would not follow the link. If you want the search engine to crawl the page referenced in the link, you would just leave it alone.

So, what’s the problem. Well, it became an issue a while ago due to sites taking advantage of this linking. So, applications such as WordPress started automatically adding the rel=nofollow to the dynamic links such as comments. Who would know this right?

So, how does it affect you? Well, if you’re using WordPress, your links may have the nofollow attribute on it’s links. So, if someone adds a reference to another site, Google won’t crawl it. This might not be so bad considering the amount of spam that’s out there. But, what if someone posted a link or comment on your site that is valid. Wouldn’t you want to reward them? Of course you would want to reward them. And, as it turns out, people pay attention to this. It’s a matter of time and efficiency. If you want to post a comment to a site, you want some perks. So, those that are knowledgeable will look at your site to see if you “dofollow” exists. If they see this exists, they’ll post to your site. Therefore, you’ll get more links.

In order to make this a dofollow site, we installed the plugin DoFollow.

What to do if a webmaster won't give domain name info

First, don’t panic, the information you need is available and it will take you about 5 minutes to figure out the next steps.

Ok, so let’s take a step back. Why would your webmaster not give you your domain name information? Well, I don’t know the answer to that one. But, we can find out It could be payment issues, it could be they are registering the site as themselves. Sometimes companies want to hold this information as leverage for hosting. Regardless, if you own the domain name, it’s yours and you can get it back with or without them.

Let’s start investigating your domain name and see if we can find out what’s happening. Go to this whois domain name lookup page. Type in your domain name and take a look at the results. What do you see? Do you see your information or someone else’s? Chances are you’re on this page because your name is not on your domain name.

Below is our domain name information with some descriptions on what the results mean. Review this next section, then review (See the section after this one if you want to get your domain name back from your webmaster):

[The registrant information states who registered the domain name. If it's not you, it could simply be your webmaster. ]
Registrant:

[Registered through: This is the name of the company that sold the domain name. So, if you do need to track down your domain name, this is the place to start. "Registered through".
It is possible to check the site and find out your webmaster is billing you more that the site is charging. That is possible, as we do it sometimes as well. Why, we initially set up and probably registered it in bulk and, it's a little extra money for us. Plus, you never have to touch it.]

The information looks nice, but now you’ve found out someone else owns your domain name, what do you do? Call the registration company listed in the “Registered through” area and prove to them you own the domain name. It’s not that bad though. You may have to provide some company documentation. Don’t worry, this is more common than you think.

Well, we ran into the same issue, our site was running slow. Because of this, people were not even waiting to visit the site, so we did some investigating.

Here’s some background.

We’re on a shared server, we’re growing though

We have a lot of Word Press plugins installed

It was taking the page approximately 3-5 seconds to load, way too much time

After some reviews from other sites, we started off by investigating what we had installed. We found that we had some redundant plugins and honestly plugins we were not using. We removed all of those miscellaneous plugins.

Next, we investigated 2 different plugins to help speed up the site, namely WP Super Cache and WP Cache.

We first installed WP Super Cache, after many tries, we were not able to get it to work. It might have been the fact we had to edit our .htaccess files manually and may not have done it correctly. So, after an hour we gave up.

Next installation was WP Cache. We installed this, turned it on, and we were up and running. So, if you’re looking to speed up your site, we definitely recommend WP Cache for it’s ease of use and simplicity. Thanks!

Well, there are tons of companies now that host WordPress sites. This site uses JoesWebShack.com. With JoesWebShack, we are able to host this site for less than $5 a month. In addition, we bought the domain name for less than $10. So, for less than $100 a year, we can run this site.

IMPORTANT: When you sign up, sign up for Linux hosting.

In addition, there is a service we used to have the hosting company install it. Essentially, you go into your admin to install, here are the instructions on how to install WordPress.

Log into your account

In the top navigation, choose Web Hosting then My Hosting accounts

Click on the Manage Account link next to your hosting listed.

Click on the big box stating “My Applications”

In the left hand navigation, click on “Blogs” this will open up a list of applications.

Click on WordPress

Look for the red button titled “Install Now”

Follow the instructions and your site will be running within the hour!

Webmaster is gone.

First, I’d advise you not to update your site.

Next, think back to when you were talking with your webmaster. Did they ever send you any usernames and passwords? Hopefully they did. Track these and find out what they are used for. Chances are, they may be for an administrative back end or your ftp information.

It’s best if you have access to an administrative back end. What is this? Well, many sites are out there running on software that allows you to change the pages on a website. All you have to do is log into this Administrative back end and make the changes. As a precaution, if you are going to make changes, copy the content to notepad before you make any changes. I’ve seen it many times where someone makes a change and hits save only to remove an entire page.

If you have ftp information, that’s good too. But, you’re about to enter the world of coding. Before you make any changes, download a copy of your entire site. You don’t want to break something and not have the ability to fix it. Also, not all programmers keep a local copy. You’ll find that sometimes changes are made directly to the site without a backup copy made.

I strongly advise against making any changes through ftp. The slightest change to any file could render your entire site useless. This of course is the worst feeling in the world.

Graphics won't display

This can be for a number of reasons, but typically it’s a reference. Here are a couple of steps I typically try:

Upload your graphic to the directory on your server.

Try altering the url address to pull up your graphic directly. For example, this link will show google’s logo for search http://www.google.com/images/nav_logo6.png

If you don’t see your graphic, then I’d wonder if the file is uploaded. Check to make sure

If you’re certain the graphic is there, compare your ftp directory names. For example, some systems are case sensitive. For example, your server directory may be images, but your address link has Images. This can also cause the issue. And, this is probably the number one issue.

If you still don’t see your graphic, double check the reference in code. It has happened where people will reference graphics on their own computer in code.

Hope that helps!
