First, I’d advise you not to update your site.

Next, think back to when you were talking with your webmaster. Did they ever send you any usernames and passwords? Hopefully they did. Track these and find out what they are used for. Chances are, they may be for an administrative back end or your ftp information.

It’s best if you have access to an administrative back end. What is this? Well, many sites are out there running on software that allows you to change the pages on a website. All you have to do is log into this Administrative back end and make the changes. As a precaution, if you are going to make changes, copy the content to notepad before you make any changes. I’ve seen it many times where someone makes a change and hits save only to remove an entire page.

If you have ftp information, that’s good too. But, you’re about to enter the world of coding. Before you make any changes, download a copy of your entire site. You don’t want to break something and not have the ability to fix it. Also, not all programmers keep a local copy. You’ll find that sometimes changes are made directly to the site without a backup copy made.

I strongly advise against making any changes through ftp. The slightest change to any file could render your entire site useless. This of course is the worst feeling in the world.

Ok, so what is a cross-sell and up-sell and what’s the difference?

Cross-sells: Think of cross sells as a competitive product to the one you’re trying to cross-sell. Maybe even a similar product with more features. We recommend choosing a similar product which is slightly more expensive. As an example, if you were selling an an printer, you could have the printer deluxe model as your cross sell. This will show up on your product detail page.

Up-sells: Think of up sells as something you want to sell to your customer that they may need when they purchase this product. For example, in following with the Printer example, an up-sell may be printer cable. Companies are famous for this. A lot of times, they will reduce the cost of the main product (printer) to sell you an overpriced up-sell. This is done a lot of times with printers and printer connection cables.

Every once in a while I’m asked how to do some simple changes in HTML. Not all administrative areas allow you to use that nice WYSIWYG editor. So, here are the most common requests:

Text Color – red, green, white, black, etc common colors
enter text here

Line break

Hyperlink
www.bluecreekweb.com

Paragraph

Bold
enter text here

What to do if you want to unbold something?

Well there are a couple of situations.
If the text looks like this: hello joe, how are you
Then the code would look like this hello joe, how are you

OR the code can look like this:
hello joe, how are you
hello how are you

This can be for a number of reasons, but typically it’s a reference. Here are a couple of steps I typically try:

  • Upload your graphic to the directory on your server.
  • Try altering the url address to pull up your graphic directly. For example, this link will show google’s logo for search http://www.google.com/images/nav_logo6.png
  • If you don’t see your graphic, then I’d wonder if the file is uploaded. Check to make sure
  • If you’re certain the graphic is there, compare your ftp directory names. For example, some systems are case sensitive. For example, your server directory may be images, but your address link has Images. This can also cause the issue. And, this is probably the number one issue.
  • If you still don’t see your graphic, double check the reference in code. It has happened where people will reference graphics on their own computer in code.
  • Hope that helps!

The direct link to the Google Search Engine Submission page is here: http://www.google.com/addurl/.

But, before you proceed, this is probably not the fastest way to get indexed. The fastest way is to add your site link to someone else’s site! For example, you can add your site link here, we’re indexed.

Another easy way is to create a blog at Google’s blogger.com, then reference your site. Once you create your blog, make sure to do the following:

  1. Log into the admin
  2. Click on the settings tab
  3. Scroll down and choose YES for the question, “Add your blog to our listings?”
  4. Then, choose YES to the question Let Search engines find your blog?

I haven’t tested the speed of adding your link to a Google Blog, but I have noticed getting listed in a couple of days with by adding your link to another site.

The easiest way to see if you are listed is to search for your domain name. For example, do a Google search for parttimewebmaster.com
